Upgrading from DebitMate 1.x
The JavaFX version kept its database in the same place this one does, so there is nothing to export.
Your file is copied before it is touched
On first launch, payments.db is copied to payments.backup-v1-<timestamp>.db. Only then does anything change.
The old table is kept, not dropped
Every row moves into the new schema — amounts converted from pounds to exact pence, due days parsed, paid state and notes preserved. The old table is renamed rather than deleted, so the upgrade is reversible.
You can rehearse it first
The app ships a script that copies your database into a temporary sandbox, runs the upgrade there, prints the result and deletes the sandbox. Your real file is never opened.
Where the key goes.
When you buy, you are emailed one long line starting DEBITMATE-1. — that is your licence key. It is checked on your own device using a key built into the app, so it works with no internet at all.
On Windows: Settings → Licence → paste the key.
On iPhone: Settings → Licence → paste the key. Rather than typing it, open the email on the phone and tap the debitmate:// activation link — it fills the key in for you.
What the app sends when it checks in
Once a day, when it has a connection, each app confirms its licence. This is the complete list of what goes in that request:
- The licence key itself
- A device fingerprint — a hash, not a serial number
- Which platform, and which version of the app
- On Windows, a checksum of the app's own program files
No bills. No transactions. No balances. No account names. No categories. Nothing you typed into the app has anywhere to go, because the app does not send it.
